Book Review of North Korea’s Military-Diplomatic Campaigns

Book Review of North Korea’s Military-Diplomatic Campaigns (1966-2008), Narushige Michishita, Routledge (2010), for the Journal of Strategic Studies, May 2010:Michishita review

With a series of careful historical case studies, Michishita shows that the North Koreans follow a script of systematic provocation using military force as an instrument to achieve political goals, and that they are very good at using violence at the time and place of their choosing so as to forestall effective retaliation.

This is particularly timely given the recent North Korean torpedo attack on the ROK corvette Cheongnan and the shelling of the islands in the Limit LIne– almost precisely following the script proposed by Michishita.
